The new Bausch + Lomb ULTRA contacts are really shaking up the contact lens market. It has been a while since a new release has gained popularity so quickly, and caused so much excitement in the industry.
History Behind Bausch + Lomb ULTRA
Contact lens manufacturers develop new contact lenses based on what the latest scientific research shows. Back in the early to mid 2000s, more and more evidence was showing that daily contact lenses were better for people than the monthly or bi-weekly kind. The last monthly lens (until ULTRA) to be released by any contact lens manufacturer was back in 2008, but most are much older. What followed was almost a decade of nothing but a flood of daily lenses pouring into the market.
Recent statistical and demographic data however, showed that until now, the majority of people in the United States and Canada still wear monthly contact lenses. This represented a very large segment of the contact lens market, and they were all still stuck wearing decade old products because manufacturers stopped investing in research to improve monthly lenses.
Until now, that is. In 2014–2015 Bausch + Lomb launched the ULTRA lens in the United States and Canada and it is a truly revolutionary monthly lens.

Features and Benefits
Bausch + Lomb ULTRA Material
The ULTRA lens is made of a silicone hydrogel material called samfilcon A. Most other leading monthly lenses are also made of a type of silicone hydrogel material.
Silicone is added to contact lenses to make them more breathable. The downside is that it also makes the lenses more rigid and less comfortable. In the past, people had to make a choice between comfort and breathability.
What makes ULTRA different is what Bausch + Lomb calls its MoistureSeal Technology. This combines both breathability and comfort in a revolutionary way.
In addition to silicone, the contact lens material is infused with something called PVP which attracts and retains moisture. The PVP completely surrounds the silicone so the eyes get the breathability of the silicone without the discomfort associated with it.
Perfect for Digital Device Users
The ULTRA lens was designed to retain 95% of its moisture even after 16 hours of wear. This is specifically intended to help people who spend a large proportion of their day looking at digital devices.
One of the rising problems in eye care is that the prolonged use of digital devices such as computer monitors, laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc., causes us to blink less frequently which can cause dry eyes, eyestrain, redness, and blepharitis, among other conditions. This is especially true for contact lens wearers and has led to many people dropping out of contacts.
For anybody who spends a significant amount of time looking at digital devices, the Bausch + Lomb ULTRA lens is the lens you should be wearing. It will significantly reduce end of day dryness and help keep you in contact lenses for many more years to come.
Bausch + Lomb ULTRA Downsides
Some contact lens wearers who have switched to ULTRA from brands that they were previously comfortable with have noted that ULTRA contact lenses can develop smudges on them that are quite difficult to clean. If present, these smudges reportedly cause blurriness and discomfort for the wearer.
Bausch + Lomb ULTRA Price
When Bausch + Lomb launched ULTRA, they set a pricing policy which meant that it would be the same price regardless of where it's sold. Although this held true for a while, today it is possible to buy ULTRA at a much lower price depending on where you shop.
