If you're new to contact lenses or considering changing to a different brand of contact lenses, I have created this guide to help you easily navigate through all the latest brands and find the one that best suits your needs.

The first thing you need to determine is whether or not you have astigmatism. To learn more about astigmatism, read this article, but a quick way to find out if you have astigmatism or not is to look at your contact lens prescription and locate the number under the 'cylinder' column. If that number is −0.75 or higher, you have astigmatism. If your 'cylinder' number is less than −0.75, you have a little bit of astigmatism, but you probably won't need a brand for astigmatism. If you have no numbers in the 'cylinder' boxes, you don't have astigmatism.

Keep in mind that this guide is only meant to help you narrow down which brand you think would work best for you. Once you have selected one, it is important to visit your eye doctor so that he/she may assess the fit and performance of that brand on your eyes in order to ensure that you will be able to wear them safely.

No Astigmatism — Spherical Lenses

If you don't have astigmatism, your options are the widest. The main questions to consider are your replacement schedule preference, comfort needs, and budget.

Daily disposable (learn more) — Fresh lens every day, no cleaning required. Best for convenience, health, and occasional wearers. Top brands: Acuvue 1-Day Moist, Dailies AquaComfort Plus, Biotrue ONEday, Acuvue Oasys 1-Day, Dailies TOTAL1, MyDay.

Monthly disposable — Replace every 30 days, requires cleaning solution. Most affordable per day. Top brands: Biofinity, Air Optix Aqua, Air Optix Plus HydraGlyde, PureVision2, ULTRA by Bausch + Lomb.

Bi-weekly — Replace every 2 weeks. Good balance of comfort and cost. Top brand: Acuvue Oasys.

Astigmatism — Toric Lenses

If you have astigmatism (cylinder of −0.75 or higher in your prescription), you'll need a toric lens. Learn what toric lenses are here.

Daily toric — Acuvue 1-Day Moist for Astigmatism, Dailies AquaComfort Plus Toric, Precision1 for Astigmatism.

Monthly toric — Biofinity Toric, Air Optix for Astigmatism, ULTRA for Astigmatism, Acuvue Vita for Astigmatism.

Bi-weekly toric — Acuvue Oasys for Astigmatism.

Presbyopia — Multifocal Lenses

If you're over 40 and have an ADD number in your prescription, you may benefit from multifocal contact lenses. Top brands: Air Optix Multifocal, Biofinity Multifocal, ULTRA for Presbyopia, Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia.

Dry Eyes

If dry eyes are a concern, see my guide to the best contact lenses for dry eyes. High-water-content and silicone hydrogel lenses with moisture-lock technology (TOTAL1, ULTRA, Acuvue Oasys) tend to perform best.
